This poem tries to capture the language of Australians who live with fire and flooding rain as the wonderful Dorothea Mackellar reminded the world. WHAT DO YOU ASK OF ME TODAY? What do you ask of me today? And what can I ask of you? Mostly I just want you near me To do what you normally do. But I also need to ask your help To fulfil my long held dream, My search to find fulfilment, To resist the flow down stream. Stand with me when I’m uncertain. Help me to choose where to stand. Encourage my grandiose efforts. Pass hope through the touch of your hand. Be near when the drought dries my courage In case I believe I can’t cope. Stand by when the bush-fires scorch me Or floodwaters drown my last hope. Share my renewal each sunrise. Enter my forest of dreams. Open each new oyster with me Cheer for the pearl in its seams. Give me your hand and your hoping. I’ll give you my future and self. In joy and in sorrow I promise My loving through sickness and health. Ask what you will my beloved. I give myself freely to you. Yours, for both richer and poorer, And herewith, my pledge, to be true. © Jim Boswell - June 2003 © ALL POETRY ON THIS WEBSITE IS COPYRIGHTED.© Copyright in this website is owned or licensed by Jim & Meg Boswell. |
