You can have the ceremony that most suits your personalities and your philosophy of life. You can promise what you want to promise (within a legal framework). You can use the symbols and words that are important to you.
Celebrants' fees were originally set by the Attorney General's Department. However this is no longer the case. There is now a range of fees charged by celebrants but some offer more services than others. A good basic service normally includes but is not limited to:
- two interviews of about one hour each to plan the ceremony
- choices of ceremony wording, including promises and readings
- the option to write some of the ceremony yourselves
- suggestions for venues
- supply and lodgment of all legal documents
Remember, as with anything else, you usually receive what you pay for - so be careful not to choose your celebrant on the cheapest price alone.
It is very important to trust your celebrant and to be able to discuss what you want your ceremony to be. One way to recognise an experienced and qualified celebrant is to check whether he or she is a member of the Australian Federation of Civil Celebrants.(AFCC). All members of the Federation must be committed to providing client-centred ceremonies and abide by the Federation's strict standards of service and quality.
