Participants Mentors (or godparents or guardians) It is an important tradition on a Name Day that parents choose people they love and respect to be mentors for their child. Sometimes those chosen are termed “Mentors” sometimes parents prefer to use the term "Godparents" or "Guardians". It is up to you, the parents, which term you choose to use. It is most important that you discuss and agree about the responsibilities of the child's mentors with the people you have chosen. I have set out some suggested "Responsibilities for Mentors" in a separate leaflet which I will give you at our meeting. After discussing these responsibilities, please amend them if necessary so that they truly reflect your agreement with the mentors/godparents/guardians. THE PLANNING MEETING: (allow up to 45 minutes) I will ask you to complete a "Personal Details" form to collect the information necessary to ensure your ceremony goes smoothly. I will also give you some “Parents’ Papers” to complete at home and return to me with information about your child and the names you have given him or her. I will then be able to write a personal ceremony for your child's Name Day. At the meeting we will also discuss the format and wording of your ceremony. Please bring your child's birth certificate to the meeting. THE CEREMONY During the ceremony, I will personally recognise the grandparents and great grandparents and any other significant guests. I will tell the guests about the meaning of the Naming ceremony, and about the individual names you have given your child. I will speak to the mentors (godparents/guardians) about their role in the child's life, and ask them to hold the child (if appropriate) and confirm their acceptance of these responsibilities by making a simple verbal response. I will ask the guests to make a wish for the child from a special "Wishing Box" and to sign it as a memento for the child to keep. I will provide professionally prepared certificates, one for the parents to keep for the child and one for each mentor/godparent/guardian. We will conclude the ceremony with the celebrant and guests repeating the words of an appropriate blessing for the child. The parents may choose either a non-religious or religious blessing. Allow about 35-40 minutes for your ceremony. |

ORIGINAL POETRY: Jim will write original poetry for your child, based on the things you tell us, and present the poem in the ceremony. This will be one of the highlights of your ceremony! IF YOU DO NOT LIVE ON THE MID NORTH COAST BUT PLAN TO TRAVEL TO THE AREA FOR THE CEREMONY, we can do all the planning and preparations by correspondence, using email and post and telephone.
