Who takes part in a Naming Ceremony?
The short answer is:     Everyone that you want to have involved.
Meg will help you design a Naming Ceremony that involves everyone you invite. But usually a small group of people will play a special part.  These are the "Godparents" or " Mentors".

Mentors (or godparents or guardians)
It is a tradition on a Name Day that parents choose people they love and respect to be recognised as mentors for their child.

Sometimes those chosen are termed  Mentors,  sometimes parents prefer to use the term Godparents or Guardians.  It is up to  you, the parents, which term you choose to use.

It is most important that you discuss with the people you have chosen to be Mentors, exactly what their responsibilities will be.

Meg will give you a copy of some Suggested Responsibilities for Mentors when you meet with her.
  • After discussing these responsibilities, you can amend them if you wish so that they truly reflect your agreement with the mentors/godparents/ guardians.
  • If you choose not to have individual mentors, Meg will invite all the guests to accept the responsibility to influence the life of the child in a positive and enriching way.
THE PLANNING MEETING:  (allow up to 45  minutes)
Meg will invite you to a meeting to discuss the details of your Namegiving ceremony. She will ask you to complete a  "Personal Details" form. This collects the information Meg needs to make sure your ceremony runs smoothly. She will also give you  some “Parents Papers” to complete at home and return to her. These papers ask for information about your child and the names you have given him or her. From the answers Meg will write a personal ceremony for your child's Name Day.  At the meeting Meg will also discuss with you the format and wording of your ceremony.

Please bring your child's birth  certificate to the meeting.

If you do not live locally, the planning can be done by correspondence, that is email and/or post.

THE NAMING CEREMONY  (Allow about 35-40 minutes for your Naming Ceremony.)

  • During the ceremony, Meg will recognise each of the grandparents and great grandparents and any other significant guests you would like to have recognised.
  • She will tell the guests about the meaning of the Naming ceremony, and about the individual names you have given your child.
  • She will speak to the mentors (godparents/guardians) about their role in the child's life, and ask them to hold the child (if appropriate) and confirm their acceptance of these responsibilities by making a simple verbal promise.
  • Meg will provide professionally prepared certificates, one for the  parents to keep for the child and one for each mentor/godparent/guardian.
  • The highlight of  your ceremony will be the presentation of an original poem written about your child from information you provide.

The Ceremony will conclude with everyone repeating the words of an appropriate blessing for the child and the family. The parents may choose either a non-religious or religious blessing.

A UNIQUE EXTRA   (An original poem  about your child and the names you have chosen)

        • Meg's husband, Jim Boswell, is a performance poet with many years experience as an entertainer.
Jim will write an original poem about your child from information supplied by you.

You will receive a Presentation Copy as a Keepsake for your child.

See more information about the poetry Jim writes here

Then ask Meg for a Naming Poem Information Form to complete.
Jim will write a personalised poem and present it in the ceremony.
