When the world disappoints or attacks you And resentment and anger invade And you wish you were some other person, Remember the promises made. When you’re gliding aloft in success mode And others sit grey in your shade And you claim you’re the child of fond fortune, Remember the promises made. Your partner has promised to love you Through the thick, lumpy bits and the thins Through the viruses and through the vigour The losses and infrequent wins. You have promised each other to comfort, To be present to help meet their needs; To be honest and open and loving; To match promise with practical deeds. If you don’t want to do it - don’t promise. Don’t bleat like the wedding goat-herds. Don’t vow if you don’t really mean it Don’t dramatise empty non-words. But, if you're determined to live them, And never pretend you forgot, Then make them with love to each other And give them your very best shot.
