Marriage is a Promise
What is Marriage?

Marriage is a promise.

A promise of companionship:

Having someone to share your life with.

Marriage is a pledge.

A pledge of loyalty:

Giving support to your companion.

Marriage is a promise and a contract;

To share sunshine and shadows;

To stand alongside;

To partner and be partnered;

To have and to hold;

To give and receive;

To love and to cherish;

For all the days that lie ahead.

Marriage doesn’t promise eternal romance,

Just life time love.

Marriage doesn’t contract ease and comfort,

Just hope and acceptance.

Marriage can’t protect you from life,

But it can provide you with

A warm shoulder and a comforting arm.

Marriage is more than the wedding day -

‘though wedding days are great.

Marriage is forever. That sounds heavy,

And it is.

Marriage is about two becoming one.

A partnership.

Which can bring joy and satisfaction like no other partnership can match.

Marriage is more than living together

Though living together can be good.

Marriage is mutual commitment.

Together, all the way, no turning back, each for the other - for the duration.

Marriage is not ‘lauding it over’.

It’s not about who’s boss.

It’s not about winning or losing, succeeding or failing.

It’s about promising together.

To live together, to work together, to love together.

Succeed together and fail together,

To cry together, to laugh together

To hope together, to come together and stay together.

For ever and for ever.

Successful marriages take planning and work,

Skill and teamwork and often lots of luck.

But the rewards can be great,

Even greater than you imagine.

You learn

How to care about the other more than self,

How to see yourself in new light

To see your partner in a golden hue.

Learn tolerance; learn patience

And maybe even parenthood.

Marriage is a doorway.

Pass through with careful thought

Determined to explore and to enjoy.

Pass through together hand in hand

Pass through and claim your mutual promised land.
